Electric Photography (Electrographics) Workshop
04.10.2026
In this one-day workshop, given by Berlin-based artist Elvira Akzigitova, participants will explore electric photography (also known as Kirlian photography) — a cameraless technique that captures the trace of an electrical discharge directly onto light-sensitive paper or film. Using an antique device called the Violet Wand, originally built for electrotherapy, matter is „electrified,“ leaving behind a shimmering, unpredictable impression of light where the eye alone can see nothing.
An introduction to the technique, some physics and myths behind it, and the work setup will be followed by time for experimentation. Each participant will work on their own pieces, guided through developing, fixing, and making positives of their prints to take home — a handful of original images.
No darkroom experience is needed to participate. We will be working mainly in black and white. All photographic materials are included, the participants should bring objects and organic matter that they wish to “electrify”. The language of the workshop will be English.
Dauer / duration: 2x6h
Termin / date: 4.10.2026, 11:00 – 17:00 Uhr, incl. 30min break
Elvira Akzigitova (1988, Tallinn) is a film-based analogue artist and printmaker who participates in international exhibitions, festivals, and workshops. Her self-taught cameraless optical designs, known as light graphics, originate from long hours of photographic darkroom work with light-sensitive materials. With a process that is led by discovery and deep feeling, the artist further expands her handmade image-making practice through slide frame cinema performances, combining live projection, moving image, sound, and optical manipulation.
Working across analogue film processes, Elvira develops a distinctly crafted, abstract, and introspective universe consisting of custom light mechanisms and tools sensitive enough to detect what is invisible to the naked eye. Her medium captures the radiant energies, while drawing from a rich tradition of experimental cinema, kinetic art, and laterna magica. A viewer of her work is met with geomantic figures, cosmic dancing images, full of movement and intent. They pulse with interpretation and invite curious introspection, creating a retreat into the pure realms of form and colour. This expanded practice opens a space to bring the tactile and poetic qualities of analogue image-making into a collective live experience.
