A dark room, gently lit by a small red light and filled with the smell of chemicals, an enlarger, and a few hours to yourself. It is our love for this process of photography and this room that brought us together.

We are Kalamari Klub.

We take a step back, away from the editing programs and the computer screens, to the complex, intricate, physical process, that allows us a special closeness to our work, analogue photography. It is not simply the moment when the print finally becomes visible that speaks to us, but the hope that we shot in the right light, the anticipation of developing the film, and the concentration needed to get every hand movement, every step in the process, right. All of this, simply for the joy of the first signs of contrast as the print floats in the developer.

We would like you to take part in this fascination of all the little details.

Kalamari Klub was founded in 2016 as an international artists’ collective for the celebration of analogue photography. We believe in film, the fine art of darkroom printing and experimental processes. Since 2016, we have been promoting and supporting local and international artists through festivals, exhibitions, workshops and a residency programme. Since September 2017, Heidelberg’s only community darkroom is run by Kalamari Klub. Our goal is to recognize and develop the importance of analogue photography in the art and culture scene of Heidelberg and abroad through our art, our outreach into the community, and our offerings of classes focusing on different styles and techniques of analogue photography.
