Eyes as Big as Plates: Künstlerinnen-Gespräch und Buchpräsentation mit Riitta Ikonen

Der Kalamari Klub lädt zum Künstlerinnen-Gespräch und anschließender Buchpräsentation des Projekts Eyes as Big as Plates mit der finnischen Künstlerin Riitta Ikonen am 7. November 2018 um 19:00 Uhr ein.
Eyes as Big as Plates ist das andauernde Kollaborationsprojekt des finnisch-norwegischen Künstlerinnen-Duos Riitta Ikonen und Karoline Hjorth. Was als spielerische Auseinander-setzung mit Charakteren nordischer Folklore begann, ist mittlerweile zu einer kontinuierlichen Suche nach Zugehörigkeit des modernen Menschen zur Natur geworden. Die Arbeiten entstehen in Zusammenarbeit mit pensionierten Bauern, Anglern, Zoologen, Klempnern, Opernsänger*innen, Hausfrauen, Künstler*innen, Akademiker*innen und neunzigjährigen Fallschirmspringern. Seit 2011 portraitierte das Künstlerinnen-Duo Senioren in Norwegen, Finnland, Frankreich, USA, Großbritannien, Island, Schweden, Japan, Grönland und auf den Färöer-Inseln. Die Bilder der Serie zeigen Einzelpersonen in verschiedenen Landschaften. Hierbei wird die Natur zum Gegenstand und Handlungsfeld: die Charaktere tragen Skulpturen und Gewänder aus natürlichen Materialien, die in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Künstler*-innen entstehen; sie scheinen wie lebende Bestandteile der Landschaften, die sie umgeben.
Eyes as Big as Plates wurde weltweit in zahlreichen Ausstellungen präsentiert. 2017 veröffentlichte das Duo mit Hilfe einer erfolgreichen Crowdfunding-Kampagne ihr gleichnamiges Buch, im gleichen Jahr wurde die Erstpublikation Eyes as Big as Plates für die Paris Photo / Aperture Foundation – Photobook Awards 2017 nominiert und gewann Gold bei Norwegens Årets vakreste Bøker 2018 (The Year’s Most Beautiful Books).
Im Rahmen des Projekts „State of Process“ lädt der Kalamari Klub regelmäßig Künstler*innen ein, Perspektiven und Hintergründe ihrer Arbeit mit einem breiten Publikum zu teilen. Die Veranstaltung findet in Ergänzung zur Ausstellung „Considering Finland“ statt, die Arbeiten aus der Serie Eyes as Big as Plates präsentiert und am 9. November 2018 um 19:00 Uhr im Port25 – Raum für Gegenwartskunst und ab 20:30 Uhr im Kunstverein Ludwigshafen eröffnet wird. Kalamari Klub invites you to an Artist talk and book presentation of Eyes as Big as Plates with the Finnish artist Riitta Ikonen on November 7, 2018 at 19:00.
Eyes as Big as Plates is the ongoing collaborative project between the Finnish-Norwegian artist duo Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth. Starting out as a play on characters from Nordic folklore, Eyes as Big as Plates has evolved into a continual search for modern human’s belonging to nature. The series is produced in collaboration with retired farmers, fishermen, zoologists, plumbers, opera singers, housewives, artists, academics and ninety year old parachutists. Since 2011, the artist duo has portrayed seniors in Norway, Finland, France, US, UK, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Sweden, Japan and Greenland. Each image in the series presents a solitary figure in a landscape, dressed in elements from surroundings that indicate neither time nor place. Here, nature acts as both content and context: characters literally inhabit the landscape wearing sculptures they create in collaboration with the artists.
Eyes as Big as Plates has been shown in countless exhibitions worldwide. In 2017, the duo released their book Eyes as Big as Plates with the help of a roaring crowdfunding campaign. It has been shortlisted for the Paris Photo / Aperture Foundation – Photobook Awards 2017 and won gold in Norway’s annual book award show: Årets vakreste Bøker 2018 (The Year’s Most Beautiful Books).
As part of the project „State of Process“, Kalamari Klub regularly invites artists to share insights about their work and background with a broad audience. The event is held in addition to the exhibition „Considering Finland“, which features works from the series Eyes as Big as Plates and opens on November 9, 2018, 19:00 at Port 25 – Space for Contemporary Art and at 20:30 at Kunstverein Ludwigshafen.
